Achieved results
Immediate results
Since 2012, the Foundation has supported 51 projects by adding them to the Incubator program. In total, program participants supported over 365,000 children. In 2019, the Incubator program includes 21 projects from 16 provinces of Russia. Since the beginning of the year, these projects have supported about 25,000 children.
Social results
The program leadership distinguishes between short-term, medium-term and long-term social effects.
Short-term social effects: The authors of social projects acquire new knowledge, experience and skills in the key areas of project administration. Feedback has shown that at the end of 2018 100% of the participants had learned new things, with 81% learning how to measure social impact, develop financial sustainability, leadership skills and teamwork, and 55% learning to scale out and implement systemic change. Also, 94% of the participants said participation in the program had strengthened their reputation.
Medium-term social effects:
- The authors of social projects improve the quality of their product and can demonstrate and measure its social impact/performance;
- They develop a sustainable business model;
- They put together a stable team;
- They scale out the project.
As of the end of 2018, about 75% of the participants were achieving their goals on the items listed above. Measurement is performed through a development tracker. It is a special assessment tool recording achieved goals; it is filled out personally for each of the participants. The assessment system was developed in Sweden; it created a theory of change, with indicators and measurement methods.
“We explain to people how to use the theory of change at our orientation meetings, which sometimes last five or even ten hours.”
The development tracker is a table with indicators which participants fill out three times a year for Skype monitoring.
The long-term, sustainable effect is when a project becomes sustainable without losing some of its social impact. Based on feedback collected between 2012 and 2018, the survival rate among projects that graduated from the program was 75%.
For example, InterAction, a Moscow-based inclusive theater project, after graduating from the Incubator changed its format: instead of a theater club for children with or without special needs, it is now a drama school offering classes in fine arts, acting, drawing, dance and circus performance. The administrators of Point B, a Novosibirsk-based career guidance center, were invited in 2019 as speakers to EdCrunch, Europe’s biggest conference on educational technologies.
The program provides the authors of social projects for children with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:
1) Designing social projects;
2) Defining indicators for measuring social performance;
3) Financial management and sales;
4) Administrative skills;
5) Presentation and promotion;
6) Quarterly reporting and monitoring social performance.
Feedback from beneficiaries:
“Our project addresses the problem that parents and professionals often overlook the issue of emotional development among children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), which is extremely important for social adaptation. We created a special methodology for children with ASD which teaches them to identify and express emotions. It includes two elements: a deck of cards and a mobile app. We joined the Navstrechu Peremenam program at a juncture when we were converting a prototype, which has demonstrated its efficiency, into a product which would be convenient to use. Currently, both tools have been marketed. “The Incubator gave us a chance to master the role of a social entrepreneur, leave the confines of a scientist’s lab and personal, hence limited, experience and go out into the public space, bringing our solution to as many people as possible, the people for whom it can improve their quality of life. At this stage, it’s not enough for us to know that our product is good. We have to learn business techniques. This realization was a revelation to us, and the learning process was difficult, yet thank to the Incubator and the Foundation’s team supporting us, it was doable.”
“Our project is called ‘In Silence.’ We design an educational platform for the deaf using the Russian sign language. This is our first year participating in the Incubator at the Navstrechu Peremenam foundation. Our project has received a tremendous boost over the last year. Thanks to the Foundation’s experts and our mentor, we now have a clear vision of our business model, we have designed specific steps for the next three years, considered the risks and opened new avenues of development. We have a better understanding of our target audience, their needs and our role in their lives. Back when we just joined the Incubator, our idea was to prepare deaf students for final exams. Today, we are working on a full-blown educational program which will include a number of segments and will help the deaf people become skilled, competitive professionals. “The Incubator has equipped us with knowledge which helps us achieve our goals. The Foundation invited the best experts in social entrepreneurship, the best trainer who can help you develop the skills you need to create a successful social project. During this year, we boosted a number of our skills: how to communicate, how to present ourselves, how to manage our finances. We have identified the strong and weak points of our project. Now we know how to take advantage of our strengths and how to minimize our risks. “The program brought us into the family of social entrepreneurs, helped us meet some extremely interesting people who worked with us on our strategy, shared their contacts, told us about their experience, offered their recommendations in difficult situations and generally provided moral support. We are grateful to the Foundation for the opportunity to participate in the Incubator, for its assistance, inspiration and support.”
